Why is car insurance so expensive in Michigan, even for drivers with low coverage?

I have the minimum coverage available and my insurance is still $700 a month. Why is it so expensive?

 can vary from state to state. Unfortunately, Michigan is one of the most expensive states to in which to insure a vehicle because it has the highest minimum coverage requirements in the US. Any accidents or tickets will also impact your rate.
While Michigan has a higher cost of insurance, there are many carriers that offer discounts or lower rates on average. Some insurers that have traditionally lower rates in Michigan include
Safeco
,
Metlife
, and
USAA
.
If you haven’t already, shop around with these carriers as well as any others in your area. You may be able to find a more affordable rate than what you are currently being offered. “
