Leg cramps are uncomfortable and unfortunately, driving for long hours makes them worse. Little movement for long periods of time—whether traveling for work or sitting on the couch—can lead to the nerves on your back and legs becoming compressed or pinched, and hence, very sore.
Sciatica may be the culprit. It’s a common condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve running through your back and thigh becomes obstructed or pinched. This can happen when you’re sitting for a long time and can cause great discomfort in your leg.
If you’re driving and your leg starts to hurt, there are a few things you can do to help ease the pain:
  • Reposition yourself—pushing your seat a bit further back (but not far enough that you can’t reach the pedals) and then stretching your legs out just a bit can significantly ease leg pain
  • Stretch your toes and get the blood moving in your lower legs
  • Tighten and relax your calves and lower legs as you drive, which can get blood flowing
  • Take a break from driving every few hours—stretch your legs and take a short walk to improve blood flow
  • If the pain persists, see a doctor or physiotherapist
