Why do Tesla owners tap the tail lights on their cars?

I’ve seen some videos of people tapping the tail lights on Tesla cars, and I don’t get it. Why would someone tap a Tesla tail light?

There are lots of rumors—some even superstitious—swirling online about why
Tesla
drivers tap their tail lights. But the most likely answer to this question is that it’s simply a way to open the car’s charging port.
Teslas, like other electric vehicles, need to be charged, and the port to plug into the charging station is located behind the tail light. The tail light is part of a small door that, when pressed, opens up to reveal the port.
There are other ways to open the Tesla charging port besides tapping the tail light, including:
  • Using the car’s touchscreen to tap the charge port icon
  • Using the key fob by holding the rear trunk button down for a second or two
  • Using voice commands to open the charge port door
  • Bringing the charging cable near the charge port door, and pressing the port button
  • Going to a Tesla Supercharger, which should automatically initiate the port door to open
