Why do some cars have windshield wipers on the rear window?

I’m researching to buy my first car and noticed that some vehicles have a windshield wiper on the rear window and some don’t. Is it dangerous not to have one, or do some vehicles need wipers on the rear window due to a design flaw? Why don’t all vehicles have rear window wipers?

While it’s not a design flaw that causes some vehicles to require windshield wipers on the rear window, it is a design choice. Rear window wipers may be needed (or not) dependent on the shape and style of the car.
SUVs
and
hatchbacks
typically have rear window wipers because of their more vertical position and proximity to the back tires. They are much more likely to see a
buildup of dust, dirt, and snow
, as the airflow over the vehicle does not push these substances off the window.
On the other hand, Sedans have a more angled rear window and the aerodynamics help keep the window relatively clear with airflow alone. These same aerodynamics could also prove too much for a rear wiper when traveling at high speeds.
