Why are my new brakes squealing?

My brakes were getting worn down so I had them replaced, but just a few weeks later, they started to make squealing noises when I pressed on them. They’re new so I’m sure the noise can’t mean I need new brakes. Why would my brakes be squealing after I just got them replaced?

You drive out of the mechanic’s garage with fresh brakes thinking you’ve taken care of the problem—just for them to start squealing right away! That’s frustrating, for sure.
The good news is it most likely isn’t an issue with your brake functionality since you’ve just had them replaced. Here are a few reasons why your brakes are squealing even with new brakes:
  • Fresh abrasive surface on your brake pads. New brake pads tend to have more abrasive surfaces which will allow for more friction, thus more deceleration, when you press down on them. The squealing noise you’re hearing could be from this abrasive surface, but it will stop in time.
  • Your rotors are wet. If there is moisture on your rotors, a thin layer of rust may form and create the squealing noise as it gets scraped away when you press on your brake. This cause of noise will also fix itself as the rust scrapes away.
  • Your rotors were not manufactured for your brake pads. If your new brake pads are different from the ones that were on your car originally, the rotor surface might not “mesh” as well with the new ones as they did with the old pads and cause that squealing noise.
