Why are electric cars so ugly?

I’m in the market for an electric car, and style is really important to me. As well as a baseline of performance, I want a vehicle that looks good and hopefully catches the eye a little bit. So far, I haven’t been able to find an electric car that satisfies my needs; to be honest, they all look a bit ugly. Why is it that they’re like that?

Well, not all electric cars are ugly—although how visually appealing a vehicle is does tend to be entirely objective.
However, there are reasons why some EVs might look different from other cars. Most of them have to do with the engineering tweaks designers have to account for when sketching out a new vehicle. They include:
  • Battery placement. Often, EV batteries tend to be placed in a spot that would disrupt legroom in a standard car. That means seats have to be adjusted, which can therefore contort the requirements for the overall silhouette of the model.
  • Aerodynamic shifts. EVs don’t have to account for airflow issues in the same way that gas-powered vehicles do. That means the front end of cars can be designed differently—leading to that strange box-like shape found on some EVs.
While there are undoubtedly some aesthetic differences between EVs and gas cars, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re inherently ugly. It’s important to do your due diligence—and find a car that looks right for you. It shouldn’t be your reason for not going electric.
