Who is responsible for self-driving car accidents?

If someone gets into an accident in a self-driving car, who is responsible? Will the company that manufactured the vehicle be on the hook, or will it be considered the driver’s fault? It seems like either could be the true culprit.

Assigning fault gets a lot more complicated when you introduce self-driving cars into the mix! While assigning responsibility after an accident will depend on the circumstances, here are some guidelines:
  • If the accident could have been prevented by the driver, then the driver will likely be considered responsible.
  • If the accident occurs due to a faulty program, however, then the blame will be placed on the company that manufactured the self-driving car.
  • If the accident was caused by another driver in another car, that driver would be assigned fault.
If you’re at fault for an accident, your car insurance rates will usually increase. Luckily, the
