Great question! Norway
has the highest number of electric cars per person in the world, as well as the highest percentage of electric cars in new car sales. They stand at 18.9 people per every electric car, and nearly 75% of new car sales in Norway were plug-in electric vehicles in 2020. These extremely high numbers are largely due to the amount of EV incentives in place for Norwegian citizens. Tax exemptions like those for road tax, toll exemptions, purchase price reductions, and 50% reduced parking prices are all available for EV owners in Norway.
Surprisingly, the U.S. is in second for the number of electric cars per person with 46.8 people for every electric car. However, their EV car sales percentage is placed much lower. It had climbed up to almost 3%, but it has since fallen to around 2.3%.
China has the largest EV market in the world, mainly due to the size of their country. There are about 2.7 million EVs in China as of December 2021, but 14% of their new car sales are plug-in electric vehicles.
