Which car insurance company is better, GEICO or Safeco?
I’ve been shopping for car insurance quotes in an attempt to lower my insurance rate. GEICO and Safeco both offer the lowest quotes for me, and both companies seem to have decent ratings. Which insurance company will give better service?

Both GEICO and Safeco have very good ratings in general, so you can turn your attention to the issues that matter—like customer service experience and claims handling.
Here’s how GEICO and Safeco stack up in those departments:
- GEICO: When it comes to customer service, GEICO ranks among the Top 5 providers in the country according to reliable sources like U.S. News. The company is largely renowned for its low rates and user-friendly app, which gives policyholders the ability to manage their coverage directly from their phone. Roughly half of GEICO’s customer base said they were satisfied with all aspects of claims handling, from the filing process to claims resolution.
- Safeco: Unfortunately, Safeco doesn’t boast the same customer satisfaction ratings as many of its competitors. The company scored poorly in J.D. Power's 2022 study on insurance shopping and claims satisfaction, and customer service scores are spotty at best. However, Safeco shines for its wide array of coverage options, including specialty auto coverages, as well as its numerous discounts that can help bring down the cost of premiums.
Of course, every company will have some adjusters and agents that are excellent and others that are not as good. At the end of the day, you should choose the company that aligns most closely with matters to you.
