Where is the Volkswagen ID.4 made?

My grandson, Ashton, is always telling me about these fancy new gizmos and gadgets and electric paraphernalia he’s into. Frankly, it all makes my head spin. Now he tells me that Volkswagen, the brand that gave us the Beetle (which still makes me cringe), is building an electric SUV in Tennessee. This can’t be true. Where is the Volkswagen ID.4 made?

The Volkswagen ID.4 is manufactured in four plants across the world—a plant in Zwickau, Germany, two plants in China at Foshan and Antig, and one plant in… you might want to sit down for this… Chattanooga,
Tennessee
.
The first ID.4s began rolling off the line at VW’s Tennessee plant during the summer of 2022. This electric crossover is the first of VW’s ID line to be produced in the U.S., and both the 82-kWh battery rear- and all-wheel drive versions, as well as the smaller 62-kWh battery variant, will be made at the Tennessee plant.
The ID.4 production comes after the German carmaker pumped $800 million into the Chattanooga plant, which had been producing the
Passat
sedan since 2011 and the
Atlas
SUV since 2017. Passat production ends this year, but both the ID.4 and the Atlas will continue to be built in Chattanooga.
Volkswagen aims to start churning out 7,000 ID.4s per month by the middle of 2023. In addition to being manufactured in the Volunteer State, numerous ID.4 components will be made in other states before being shipped to the Chattanooga plant. Electronics will come from Kentucky and North Carolina, steel will be sent from Ohio and Alabama, and interior components will hail from Indiana and South Carolina.
