Where is the trunk on a Volkswagen Beetle?

I’m sitting here watching my girlfriend work on her VW Beetle’s engine, and I’m so confused. If the engine is in the trunk, then where is the actual trunk?

We understand your confusion. The trunk on a Volkswagen Beetle is located where you’d normally expect the engine to be—under the hood.
