Where is the fender on a car?

I was looking at buying a used car, and the owner said that the fender had been replaced after an accident. I didn’t buy that car, but it left me with a question: Where is the fender on a car, and what is its purpose?

The fender on a car is the piece of metal over the top of the wheel that prevents mud, rocks, and other road debris from getting kicked up by the tires.
It helps me to picture a bicycle—the fender is the curved metal guard above the tires. Cars are the same, but depending on the body style, the fender can look different.
If you have a car where the wheels stick out past the body—like a
Volkswagon Beetle
—the fenders will extend out past the front doors of the car.
For narrower cars, the fender is more flush with the rest of the body, like the
Toyota Corolla
.
