Mazda is from Fuchu, Hiroshima, Japan. Founded in 1920, the company has remained in this area of the country since its inception. The original founder, Jujiro Matsuda, started the company, oddly enough, as a cork factory. But by 1927, the company had nearly failed and had to be bailed out by investors.
In 1931, the company pivoted to auto-rickshaws, and eventually into motorbikes, motorcycles, and cars. Mazda gained popularity in Japan and throughout Asia, and eventually moved into the American marketplace in 1970 with the unveiling of the Mazda R100.
Today, the company produces around 1.5 million vehicles a year, making Mazda the 15th-largest automaker in the world.
