Where did the name Volkswagen come from?

I recently bought a Volkswagen. The brand name is so unique! I know it comes from Germany, but where specifically does “Volkswagen” come from? Thanks!

Congrats on your new Volkswagen! This German auto manufacturer has been immensely popular all over the world since its founding in 1937. Roughly translated, Volkswagen means “the people’s car”.
The Volkswagen company was originally founded by the German government to stoke national pride as Volkswagenwerk (“the people’s car company”) in 1937. Even those with the loosest grasp of world history can guess that it was the Nazi party who formed Volkswagen. The company was first based in Wolfsburg, Germany and was run by the German Labour Front.
Because of its connection to the Nazi party, Volkswagen struggled to gain footing in the American market after World War II. Eventually, the company reestablished itself in the modern market. Volkswagen has tried to honor its early days by periodically offering the Wolfsburg trim on some of its models.
