Where did the name Nissan come from?

The name Nissan originated in Japan in 1933 when foundry and automotive part maker Nihon Sangyo was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Nihon Sangyo needed a ticker symbol, so it essentially used a portmanteau of Nihon and Sangyo to create Nissan—its original ticker on the stock market. After that, the name simply stuck.
