Where did the Ford Mustang get its name?

The Ford Mustang is my favorite car of all time, embodying American style and power in an impeccable way. However, I was debating with my friend about how the car got its name. He said it’s named after the horse, which would make sense with the horse emblem, but I’m not sure. Where did the Mustang get its name?

Although the iconic Mustang horse logo would lead you to believe that it’s named after the wild horse, that’s simply not true. The Ford Mustang got its name from the WWII-era P-51 Mustang fighter plane.
Ford credits the executive stylist—a man by the name of John Najjar—as the man who chose the name for the Mustang. Apparently, Najjar was an avid historian of WWII history and had a fascination with the warplane, borrowing its name for the soon-to-be iconic muscle car.
