Where can I sleep overnight in a van?

I'm planning a cross-country road trip and I'm going to need to scope out places to stay along the way. Are there certain types of land that are better for overnight parking or places that I should avoid? I have a renovated campervan, but it doesn't have running water, so it would be good to be close to that.

“If you’re on vacation, stopping at National Parks or forests could be great areas to stay. You can reserve RV camping at one of the campgrounds, many of which offer running water and bathrooms.
Other good places to look for are:
  • rest areas
  • city parks (provided you check the local ordinances)
  • select grocery store lots
Many van life travelers swear by Walmart parking lots.
If you’re going to leave your car overnight at any point, it may be a good idea to invest in
