Great question, although the answer could depend on who you ask. Electric cars actually had quite a presence on U.S. roads around the turn of the century, and some historians estimate that in 1900, about a third of American cars were electric.
The first mass-produced modern electric car—the EV1—came from General Motors in 1996. Just over 1,000 were made, but the program ended in 2003 due to a lack of popularity. Some models were even taken off the road completely.
