When should you stop driving with Parkinson's?

My parents are getting older and while it’s no issue yet, I want to prepare for the eventual possibility that Parkinson’s could affect their ability to drive. When should you stop driving with Parkinson’s?

I’m sure your parents would appreciate knowing that you’re concerned for their
safety
.
One action you can take now is to get a baseline assessment of their driving abilities before they start to decline. Here are a few warning signs that it’s time to schedule an assessment:
  • Unusual driving behaviors like stopping or slowing down without reason
  • They get lost on familiar roads
  • They’re getting ticketed frequently for traffic infractions Look at the medical protocol in your state. Some states are self-report, which means it will ultimately be up to your parents to decide whether or not they’re still fit to drive.
In other states, doctors must report any driver safety concerns to the DMV and offer any recommendations, which may include:
  • They can continue driving without restrictions
  • They can continue driving with limitations
  • They can no longer drive Ultimately, it takes a village to determine when a person should stop driving. Approach your parents gently with your concerns and surely you’ll make the best decision together.
While we’re already on the topic of safety and security, make sure you and your loved ones are protected with the best insurance that money can buy at an affordable price.
