When should I use hazard lights while driving?

I was driving on the highway recently when it started downpouring rain. I always notice other drivers turning on their hazard lights in harsh weather. Is that required? When should I use my hazard lights?

You’re not alone on this one! Hazard lights aren’t usually discussed in detail. There are different laws in every state, but overall, you should use your hazard lights while driving to alert other drivers of potential danger.
So, what exactly is considered a vehicular hazard? Here are some examples:
  • Getting pulled over by a police officer
  • Getting into an accident
  • Car maintenance issues
  • Performing maintenance or changing a tire on the roadside
  • Driving in a funeral procession
Contrary to popular belief, it’s not necessary to use your hazard lights in bad weather. If your visibility is impaired to the extent that you need to alert other drivers, your
safest maneuver
is to pull your car over.
Another way to protect yourself while on the road is by having great
car insurance
coverage. But there’s no reason to overpay.
