When should dementia patients stop driving?

My grandma is getting up in age and has started to become much more forgetful than usual. She hasn’t been diagnosed with dementia, but I’m starting to seriously worry about her driving. When should dementia patients stop driving?

I’m sorry you’re so worried about your loved one. Dementia can progress differently in different patients.
If your grandma isn’t as sharp as she used to be, that doesn’t necessarily mean she has to stop driving immediately. Most people with dementia continue to drive—but generally stop within three years of being diagnosed.
Here are five common indicators that a person’s dementia has become too great of a safety risk to continue driving:
  • A recent increase in tickets, accidents, or mysterious vehicle damage
  • Not wanting to drive with others in the car for fear of judgment
  • Inability to correctly interpret colors or words such as “follow the yellow dotted lines” or confusion about road rules
  • Increased road rage or atypical anger spells while driving
  • Getting lost in familiar places or being disoriented about where they are
If you notice any of the above indicators in addition to your grandma’s forgetfulness, you can have a gentle talk with your grandparent about taking a driving assessment.
While your grandma is still driving, make sure she’s as secure as possible with the right
