When is the best time to visit Washington, D.C.?

My son’s 13th birthday is coming up, and I promised to take him on a big trip to celebrate. He’s really into history, so he wants to go to Washington, D.C. When is a good time of year to visit the nation’s capital?

What a lucky kid! That will be such an epic trip.
If you can swing it, the best time to visit Washington, D.C. is September through November. During the fall, the weather is much more comfortable and there will also be fewer tourists to deal with. There will be shorter lines at the museums and memorials, too.
The weather is also decent from March to May, but between Spring Break, school tours, business conferences, and seasonal festivals, you can expect a few more tourists than during the fall season. And summer brings in the most sightseers.
You can get around in Washington, D.C. via public transportation, but having a car will make your trip feel less restrictive and more convenient. Whether you take your own vehicle or prefer to

, you should probably make sure you have the right
