Great question—wet roads can certainly be dangerous!
When driving on wet roads, the first thing you should do is use common sense. Always drive slower than the posted speed limit and keep an eye on surrounding drivers. Knowing what’s around you will help you safely evade any unexpected obstacles.
Below are a few more things you can do to drive safely when you’re on wet roads:
  • Drive predictably so that drivers around you won’t have to make sudden maneuvers to avoid you, which can be extra dangerous when the roads are wet.
  • Apply brakes slowly before turning so that the car following you will have time to brake earlier. This will help prevent both parties from slipping.
  • Increase following distance so that you have more room to gradually apply the brakes. Braking suddenly will lead to hydroplaning!
  • Do not accelerate or brake suddenly if your car is hydroplaning. Instead, you should keep your foot on the gas gently and steer forward so that your car can regain traction.
  • Check your tires before leaving to ensure that the treads aren’t worn down. The proper amount of treads will give you much better traction on the roads.
Unfortunately, some accidents are unavoidable, which is why having the proper insurance coverage is important. But adding more coverage doesn’t mean you have to
