When driving on the highway, what should I scan?

Which area should you scan when driving on the highway? We talked about it in driver’s ed today and I wrote down the question but not the answer!

When you’re driving on the highway, you should scan 12 to 15 seconds ahead of you. This distance should be equal to about a quarter-mile when you’re driving on the highway.
It’s also a good idea to practice this when you’re driving in the city. In this case, you’ll need to scan one to two blocks ahead of you, depending on how fast you’re driving. Doing this will give you more time to stop in the event that a hazard appears in your path.
