When do you have to stop for a school bus?

I just moved out of the city and into the suburbs with a lot more families—especially kids. I’m new to the whole residential thing and I pass a lot of schools on my commute. When are you supposed to stop for a school bus?

Moving anywhere
can be a bit of a culture shock, but especially when your surroundings are so vastly different. The laws about when you have to stop for a school bus vary by state and by the type of road you’re driving on.
A bus will typically use flashing lights and a stop sign extension when it needs surrounding drivers to stop for children. Here are the general rules about who needs to stop for school bus depending on the type of road you are on.
  • Non-divided highways: Most states require drivers moving in both directions to stop for a school bus on a non-divided highway regardless of how many lanes there are.
  • Divided highways: Most states will only require drivers moving in the same direction of the bus to stop when driving on a divided road. Drivers in the opposing lanes of traffic are not always required to stop.
Once again, these are only the general rules across most states, so check your local legislation for the exact laws and expectations.
