When do I need to add my spouse to my auto insurance?

Should I add my spouse to my auto policy before or after the wedding? We will be getting married in three months and I would like to take care of as much of the paperwork ahead of time as possible. Can I make the update now?

“You can update your
car insurance
ahead of time. However, the change is dependent on the situation.
Do you and your future spouse currently live in the same household? If so, then yes! You can update them and their vehicle. The relationship status would be listed as fiance for both of you until you are married.
If you currently live in separate locations, you should update the policy once you live together.
After the wedding, the only changes needed are to update the relationship status to married and any name changes if applicable. If either of you plans to change your name, update your Social Security card and driver’s license first. Then, contact your insurance company.
Your name and ID card should match to avoid any potential issues with authorities if you ever need to present your information.
Big life changes like getting married are a perfect time to re-evaluate your insurance needs.
