The Volkswagen Group purchased
Porsche
in 2011. But the acquisition was years in the making—starting all the way back in 1969.
That was the first time Porsche (then an independent company) and Volkswagen collaborated—and the resulting vehicles (the Porsche 914 and 914-6) were co-produced with parts from both manufacturers.
Just seven years later, in 1976,
Volkswagen
and Porsche joined forces once again, this time to release the Porsche 912E and 924 (both of which remain valuable collectibles among
classic car
enthusiasts).
But in 2005, collaboration officially changed to partnership. Porsche SE (the automobile’s holding company) began buying stock in Volkswagen, quickly becoming the German company’s largest and most authoritative shareholder. In return, Volkswagen purchased stake in Porsche AG (the automobile manufacturing company), earning majority stake—and eventually merging the two companies in 2011.
Volkswagen was named the parent company to Porsche AG, and, as a result, many Porsche vehicles are manufactured at Volkswagen factories in Europe.
