This may be a dumb question, but when did the electric car start getting popular? I’ve heard about them before, but they seem to be the talk of the town now.

It’s not a dumb question at all! There have been two spurts of electric car popularity, each at the turn of the century.
In the 1900s around the time when EVs were first invented for the consumer market, EVs were extremely popular. In New York City, there was an electric taxi fleet of about 60 EVs. Companies and individual buyers loved making use of the new technology that didn’t have to be fed or put in a stable at night like the horses.
The more recent rise to popularity was again at the turn of the century in the 2000s when the world became much more focused on fighting climate change. Again, EV technology provided a better alternative to the carbon emissions of combustion engine vehicles which had risen in popularity during the century. The coming of a new millennium brings with it many technological and cultural changes, but EVs have stood the test of time. Who knows what the year 2100 will bring?
