When did the Dodge Challenger first come in an R/T trim?

I love the Dodge Challenger but can only afford a used one. What year did Dodge start making a Challenger R/T, so I know where to start looking?

The
Dodge Challenger R/T
is definitely a great pick! The Challenger R/T was first produced in 1970 as a pony car, though Dodge stopped production after 1983. In 2008, they released the third generation with the bigger, faster Challenger sports car. It remains in production today, and the V8 R/T has been available for each model year since 2009.
Here are some of the standard features for the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T:
  • 372-hp, 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine
  • 401 ft-lb maximum torque
  • 18-inch aluminum wheels
  • AM/FM stereo with CD and MP3 player
  • All-speed traction control
  • Seating for five
