, but the two companies have often been lumped together due to their British roots and prior acquisitions by other automakers.In an effort to expand into the luxury automotive segment and compete with the likes of
BMW
and Mercedes-Benz
, Ford purchased Jaguar in 1999. The Detroit automaker then followed this up with the purchase of Land Rover in 2000 to add some luxury to its expanding portfolio.However, its ownership of the two companies was shortlived. Following the economic fallout from the Great Recession, Ford sold both Land Rover and Jaguar to India-based Tata Motors in 2008, which has owned it ever since.
