When did Honda buy Acura?

I’ve always been a fan of Acura, but I don’t know all that much about the history of the brand other than the fact that it’s owned by Honda. When was Acura purchased by Honda?

Honda
never actually bought Acura. In 1986, Honda created the Acura brand as the luxury automotive segment of its business.
However, the idea behind the Acura brand was more than just competing with American and European luxury automakers of the time. In the early 1980s, Japan’s government introduced restrictions on automotive imports to the United States. As a result, Honda found that exporting more expensive vehicles to America increased its profits and margins.
However, Honda wasn’t a luxury automaker, so the company needed a way to send more expensive, upscale cars to the U.S. This led to the creation of
Acura
in 1986. When the company debuted, it interestingly had only two cars: the
Acura Integra
and the Acura Legend.
While the Legend faded out over the years, Acura brought back the Integra in 2023, appealing to the nostalgia of owners in the 1980s and 1990s.
