When did Ford buy Mercury?

I’ve owned a few Mercury cars over the years, and they’ve all been pretty reliable. While I know that Ford made Mercury for a long time, I wasn’t sure when they purchased the brand. When was Mercury purchased by Ford?

A great question with an interesting answer!
Mercury
was part of the Ford family of brands for over 70 years, but Ford never actually bought Mercury. Mercury was created in 1938 by Edsel Ford—the son of famed Ford Motor Company founder Henry Ford.
The idea behind the Mercury name was to forge a mid-priced model between the more affordable Ford nameplate and the high-end
Lincoln
luxury brand.
Mercury merged with Lincoln to create Lincoln-Mercury in 1945 and effectively separated their operations from Ford. The Mercury brand lasted until 2010 when Ford dissolved it to focus solely on the Ford and Lincoln production lines—ending a run that saw some of Ford’s most popular cars like the Comet, Marauder, Cougar, and more.
