When did Ford buy Jaguar?

Long-time Jaguar fan here. I remember hearing at some point that Ford owned the company, but I can’t remember when that was. What year did Ford buy Jaguar?

Ford Motor Company bought
Jaguar
in the year 2000, then sold it just eight years later to Tata Motors of India in 2008.
The acquisition was 11 years in the making—with Ford initially going after U.S. and U.K. shareholders of the company in 1989. But in 1999, Ford became the top bidder, and would adopt Jaguar as a subsidiary (along with
Land Rover
) in the following year.
Under Ford’s ownership, two new Jaguar models were released—the saloon-style
S-type
and compact executive X-Type. Despite the relative popularity of both models, neither remains in production.
In its eight years of ownership, the Jaguar marque failed to see profitability under Ford’s leadership—which is perhaps why Ford Motor Co. announced it intended to sell the company as early as 2007. Since its acquisition by Tata Motors, Jaguar and its sibling marque Land Rover have been combined into one overarching business, and remain under the direction of the renamed Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC.
