When did Ferrari buy Maserati?

I love sports cars, but I honestly don’t know much about them. I’d love to be the proud owner of a Ferrari one day, and I didn’t realize they purchased Maserati. When did Ferrari buy Maserati?

Hopefully, your dream of owning a sports car comes true before you know it! Ferrari bought Maserati—the Italian luxury sports car manufacturer’s long-time rival—in 1999.
But the story of Ferrari buying Maserati actually goes back to July 1997 when Fiat Automobiles, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, sold a 50% share in Maserati to Ferrari that was actually owned by Fiat at the time.
And in 1999, Ferrari took full control of Maserati—making it part of its luxury division. Since 2001, Maserati has been using Ferrari’s engines, after the debut of the Mas Coupe that was powered by Ferrari’s 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine.
