When did Chrysler make the first Town & Country minivan?

I’m having a bit of a family dispute. I vividly remember my parents proudly showing off their brand new minivan in 1990. It was a Chrysler Town & Country, and they were pleased to buy one right after its release. But my in-laws swear that they owned a Town & Country in the early 1980s—before I was even born! Can you settle this debate for us?

Navigating a disagreement with the in-laws is pretty tricky, but I’m happy to tell you that you’re both right. The first
Chrysler Town & Country
was released in 1990. Chrysler had intended to release the minivan in 1989 but had a slight delay, so they released two versions of the Town & Country minivan in 1990, with slightly different V6 engines.
Your inlaws may have owned a Town & Country in the 1980s, too. The minivan was an extension of the Chrysler Town & Country station wagon, produced from 1948 to 1988. They even both shared the same faux wood paneling on the outside.
The 1990 was a luxury vehicle with no trim levels but lots of options. It came standard with:
  • A 4-speed automatic V6 engine
  • 150-hp for the later 1990 model (produced after July of 1989)
  • 142-hp for the earlier 1990 model
  • Seating for seven
  • Leather seats and door panels
  • Power windows and locks
  • Roof luggage rack
  • Air conditioning
