When did Audi buy Bentley?

After doing a bit of digging on Audi, I learned quite a bit about the brand and its history. One thing I found interesting was that Bentley is no longer a British company—it’s owned by Audi. When did that happen?

Technically speaking,
Audi
never bought Bentley. In 1998, Audi’s parent company, VW Group, purchased Bentley for a whopping $790 million. However, it wasn’t until 2022 that
Volkswagen
officially put the Bentley nameplate under the direction and supervision of Audi.
On top of the initial purchase price, estimates showed that VW Group spent a total of $2 billion to completely revive the Bentley name, which had been in dire financial straits for almost three decades.
Today, the purchase looks like a great move by Volkswagen. The company earns about $1 billion per year in annual revenue and continues to maintain a healthy profit margin in the process.
