What’s the oil capacity in a 2015 Ford Explorer?

Great question! Motor oil is arguably the most important fluid in your car. It keeps the engine lubricated and helps dissipate a whole lot of heat. So let’s take a look at the 2015 Ford Explorer’s oil capacity, and also see what oil Ford recommends, too.
There are three engines available for the 2015 Ford Explorer, and different types of oil are needed for each. So take a moment to confirm which type of engine your Explorer has before buying fresh motor oil:
- The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine takes 5.7 quarts (5.4 liters) of SAE 5W-30 synthetic blend or full synthetic motor oil
- The 3.5-Liter Ecoboost engine takes 6 quarts (5.7 liters) of SAE 5W-30 synthetic blend or full synthetic motor oil
- The 3.6-liter V6 engine takes 6 quarts (5.7 liters) of SAE 5W-20 synthetic blend of full synthetic motor oil
The 2015 Ford Explorer is equipped with Ford’s Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor (IOLM), which lets you know when it’s time to get an oil change. If this system fails, however, you should get an oil change every 5,000 miles. Never exceed 10,000 between oil changes, as this can put a lot of wear on your engine and cause severe damage.
