What's the difference between transmission fluid vs engine oil?

I went to an auto parts store to get more engine oil for my car. The worker tried to explain the difference between engine oil and transmission fluid, but I’m not sure I fully understand. What’s the difference between transmission fluid vs engine oil?

Transmission fluid and engine oil are vital to your car’s operation so it runs smoothly, but there are key differences between transmission fluid vs. engine oil.
Engine oil is used as a lubricant in the engine, and it also deals with contaminants from fuel combustion. It needs to be drained periodically to remove the contaminants. Transmission fluid has lubrication properties, but it is hydraulic fluid. It is not suitable for the engine itself.
