What’s the difference between the 2021 BMW X3 vs. the 2021 BMW X5?
I’ve been in the car-buying process for a while, and have finally narrowed my options down between two BMW models: the 2021 X3 and the 2021 X5. I’m still just looking for some guidance in making my decision—what are the main differences between the two?

, you’ll want to look to three specific features of each car: - Passenger and cargo space
- Engine type and horsepower
- Your price point and driving needs
While the X3 and X5 share BMW’s classic style, they vary in these three crucial ways. That’s because the X3 is actually a compact SUV, while the X5 is a mid-size SUV—and you’ll find an overall larger vehicle capable of holding more significant cargo with the latter.
In addition to seating up to seven, the X5 sports a 3.0L, I-6 cylinder engine capable of up to 335 hp. It’s also got 33.9 cubic feet of storage—and all of that comes at a starting price point of $59,400.
The X3, on the other hand, is somewhat smaller, with a standard five-seat capacity and 28.7 cubic feet of cargo space. It also comes standard with a 2.0L, I-4 cylinder engine with less hp than its larger counterpart (about 250 hp, to be exact). That being said, it also comes at a lower price of $43,000.
Determining which is right for you comes down to preference, budget, and driving needs. If a compact SUV can suit your needs, you’ll find plenty of room and reliability with the X3—but if you’re looking for a vehicle that’s bigger and faster, and can afford to pay the difference for it, go with the X5.
