If you’re looking for the drive of a lifetime, the best route from LA to Chicago takes one of the most famous highways in the United States—U.S. Route 66, a.k.a. the Mother Road.
Here’s how to get there:
  • Head out of Los Angeles onto I-10 E, to I-15 N, then take I-40
  • Take a detour along US 89 N and Arizona Highway 64 W to hit Grand Canyon National Park
  • Follow I-40 E to New Mexico, past pink cliffs, tiny towns, and the Continental Divide (the highest point on Route 66)
  • Continue along I-40 E through Oklahoma
  • Take I-44 past Tulsa and Broken Arrow to Afron
  • Continue along I-44 through Missouri
  • Head onto I–55 and follow it into Chicago
