What’s the best route from San Diego to San Francisco?

I’ll be in California over the summer for a work trip and I plan to take some time to travel the coast by car. What is the best route from San Diego to San Francisco?

Sounds like you’re going to have a lovely work trip! There are two great ways to go depending on what you plan to do. Let’s review both.
The best, most scenic route is to drive the Pacific Coast Highway (Highways 1 and 101). Here’s what you’ll do:
  • Take I-5 out of the city, just past Mission Bay Park and Torrey Pines State Reserve
  • Follow I-5 N until you reach exit 79
  • Take exit 79 and merge onto Ca-1 N/E Pacific Coast Highway
  • Continue through Los Angeles on Highway 1
  • Follow the route through Malibu, then get onto Highway 101 at Oxnard
  • Stay with Hwy 101 N up until you hit Market St in San Francisco
  • Take exit 434B and you’re there!
Take Interstate 5 for the best inland route. Follow these directions for the fast, most direct travel:
  • Hug the coast on I-5 while leaving
    San Diego
  • Continue on I-5 until you see signs for I-580 W (Tracy/San Francisco)
  • Stay on 580-W, following signs for Oakland/San Francisco
  • Take exit 19A and merge onto I-80 W
  • Stay on I-80 W, then take exit 1B and merge onto US-101 N toward Golden Gate Bridge
  • Take exit 343B on the left, and welcome to sunny
    San Francisco
