What's the best route from Portland, Oregon to Reno, Nevada?

I’ve lived in Portland, Oregon my whole life, but I just got offered an incredible job opportunity in Reno, Nevada that I can’t pass up. I’m going to be moving down there in a few weeks, but I want to take a road trip and explore the area before I do. What’s the best way to get from Portland to Reno?

Congrats on the new opportunity! It’s awesome that you’ll be making some memories down in
Reno
before you make the official move from
Portland
. The fastest route along the 531-mile journey will take you about eight hours and 51 minutes to cover. Here’s what you’ll do:
  • Get on I-5 S from S Harbor Dr
  • Follow I-5 S to OR-58 in Lane County and take exit 188 from I-5 S
  • Continue onto OR-58
  • Continue on US-97 S and take CA-139 S to Lookout Hackamore Rd in Modoc County
  • Continue on Lookout Hackamore Rd to Bieber
  • Follow CA-139 S and US-395 S to E 8th St in Reno and take exit 13 from I-80 W
  • Drive to Old U.S. 395 S/N Virginia St
Once you’re in Reno, you can get a feel for your new home! If you happen to have some extra time along the way, you could stop in the popular cities of

Ashland
,
Salem
, and
McMinnville
.
You’re going to be driving by some epic nature spots along the way, too. If you’re a nature lover, check out:
