We’re taking a family road trip to Yellowstone National Park. We can probably get there in a day but we’d like to make a few stops along the way. What’s the best route from Mt Rushmore to Yellowstone?

! The best route from Mt Rushmore to Yellowstone should be a really easy one to follow. First, you’ll take US-16 W to I-90 W. Then, just merge onto US-89 S until you start seeing signs for Yellowstone National Park. The distance is about 535 miles, which should take you over 8 hours to drive. Eight hours can be a lot with kids in the car! If you want to stop a few times along your route, consider these great stops:
- Thunder Basin National Grassland: Located between the Big Horn Mountains and the Black Hills, you’ll definitely want to stop and stretch your legs here. Take a short hiking break and soak in the surrounding beautiful landscape.
- Custer Gallatin National Forest: Speaking of beautiful landscapes, stopping by Custer Gallatin along the way is a must! It’s a lovely gateway before your final destination. Just watch out for bears!
