What’s the best route from Columbia SC to Myrtle Beach?

I’m going to be spending some time in South Carolina for work soon, but I want to make sure I see the sights as well! I’m thinking about a weekend beach trip to kick things off—what’s the best route from Columbia to Myrtle Beach?

South Carolina
is home to stunning natural beauty and compelling history, so there’s lots to explore and you’re sure to have a wonderful time—even if it’s a work trip.
The best route from
Columbia
to
Myrtle Beach
is via I-20 East. You’ll stay on 1-20 for about 80 miles or so before heading north briefly on I-95. From there, State Road 21-24 will connect you with Highway 76, which will connect with Highway 501 S via SC-576.
This route is about 152 miles, and should take you just under 3 hours if you don’t make any stops. But if you do take some time to see the sights (and we recommend you do) here are a few things to check out:
  • Sweetgrass basket stands: These dot the highways in South Carolina, and are a truly unique souvenir and piece of history. Made by hand since the 1700s and one of the oldest forms of West African art in the US, sweetgrass baskets are an essential SC keepsake.
  • Local museums and shops: Too many to count, you’ll pass several local museums and shops on the way to Myrtle Beach. Don’t hesitate to stop the car and take a peek—you’ll be glad you did.
  • Sparky’s Country Store: Forgot something? Sparky’s has you covered. Snacks, nuts, candies, jams, and a wide variety of oddities you never knew you needed await you.
One last thing before you head to the beach—make sure you’re ready for the unexpected with a
