What’s the best route from Chicago to Los Angeles?

My friends and I are planning a road trip across the country, starting in Chicago and finishing in L.A. What’s the best route, keeping in mind we want to see as much as possible along the way?

What a road trip! If you’re looking to make the most of the drive from
Chicago
to
LA
, Route 66 is the best route to get there. The drive takes you through some of the country’s most epic scenery—mountains, cities, farmland, desert, and everything else you can imagine.
Here are the directions:
  • Get on I-55 S/Stevenson Expy from S Clark St
  • Continue on I-55 S
  • Take exit 40B W for I-44 W
  • Take exit 34 for I-44 W/US-412 W toward OK-66/Tulsa
  • Merge onto I-44/US-412 W
  • Take the exit onto I-40 W toward Amarillo
  • Merge onto I-15 S
  • Stay on I-15 S, follow signs for Los Angeles/San Diego
  • Take exit 115A to merge onto CA-210 W toward Pasadena
  • Take the Interstate 605 S exit
  • Take exit 22 to merge onto I-10 W toward Los Angeles
  • Stay on I-10 W, follow signs for Valley Blvd/Long Bch/I-710
  • Continue on San Bernardino Fwy, follow signs for US 101/Los Angeles/I-5 N/Sacramento
  • Take exit 2B toward Alameda St/Union Station
Along the way, you’ll pass through eight states and their major cities, such as
St. Louis
,
Tulsa
,
Oklahoma City
,
Amarillo
,
Albuquerque
,
Flagstaff
, and
Santa Monica
.
