The best route from California to Colorado depends on which part of California is your starting point. If you’re leaving from the San Francisco area, your best bet is to make your way to I-80 E. From there, take the following steps:
  • Take exit 48 toward East Fernley.
  • From East Fernley, get on I-80BUS W and take it to the exit for US-50 Alt E.
  • Continue on US-50 E through Utah until you reach the I-15 N merger toward Salt Lake City.
  • Follow I-15 N and US-50 E to I-70 E, and take I-70 into Colorado.
This route covers 1,209 miles and will take 19 to 20 hours to complete.
If you’re leaving from southern California or the Los Angeles area, you’ll travel mostly on I-15 N and I-70 E. Start by getting on I-10 E and from there:
  • Take exit 58A to get on I-15 N, and follow I-15 all the way through Nevada, Arizona, and part of Utah
  • Take exit 132 onto I-70 E toward Denver and into Colorado.
This route from Los Angeles is 1,017 miles and will take about 15 to 16 hours to complete.
