What’s the best route from Austin to Houston?
I live in Austin, but I have yet to check out Houston and explore. I’m planning to head there to do some sightseeing, but I want to avoid tolls and traffic along the way if I can. What’s the best way to get to Houston from Austin?

Whether you want to visit the Space Center or go on a foodie tour, you’ll have a blast! The simplest route is taking US-290, but you can also take Highway 71 to I-70. Either way takes 2.5 hours, which is a blip on the everything’s-bigger-in-Texas roadmap.
- Get on I-35 N/US-290 E from E 7th St
- Continue on US-290 E and drive to Bagby St in Houston
- Take exit 47C from I-45 S
- Turn left onto Bagby St
If you want to break up the drive, you can stop at an iconic Buc-ee’s, which is a staple on the Texas roads. Once you reach downtown Houston, you can decide where you want to explore. These are some of the best sites to see:
- The Houston Museum of Natural Science
- Minute Maid Park
- Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
- Children’s Museum Houston
- Houston Zoo
