What’s the best driving route from New York to Las Vegas?

I’ve had it with New York’s traffic, noise, aggressive cabbies, and gruff people—we’re heading to Vegas, where the heat is constant, the Strip is packed, and where people treat you right (except at the blackjack table, of course). What’s the best route to Las Vegas from New York?

Wishing you the best of luck in Vegas’s friendlier environs! To answer your question, the best driving route from New York to Las Vegas is a straight western shot along I-80, a trip that will take 25 hours of driving time and will cover 2,522 miles. You’ll probably want to break the trip up into several days.
Some of the highlights to gawk at and enjoy on your expedition west:
  • Head west out of New York state and drive across the belly of Pennsylvania before stopping in Cleveland, Ohio, for a boo around the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame
  • Head west and stop for lunch in Chicago, Illinois for some deep dish pizza and marvel at the Windy City’s architecture
  • Roar across the plains of Iowa and Nebraska, but make sure to stop in Des Moines to take in the Botanical Garden, and stretch your legs with a walk through Omaha’s Old Market District
  • Giddy-up and gallop through diverse Denver before ascending (and then descending) Colorado’s mountains as you venture into Utah—explore the spectacular Bonneville Salt Flats, 30,000 acres of hard, crusted salt, on Great Salt Lake’s western fringe
  • Make your descent through Nevada but make a bit of a detour to visit Area 51 and bend elbows with some little green men
  • Drive the final lap into Las Vegas where the people—as you say—treat you right
