What’s the best driving route from Denver to Boston?

I’m going to visit family in Boston this summer, but I’m scared of flying. If I don’t mind doing an overnight or two, what’s the best driving route from Denver to Boston?

Getting from Denver to Boston is about 30 hours of driving depending on traffic conditions and how often you need to stop for gas and food.
If you’ll be traveling with someone, you can do the trip over two days by stopping overnight around Chicago—but you’ll need to split around 15 hours of driving time each day. If you’re traveling alone, it’s much safer to do the trip over three or four days if you want to avoid dangerous conditions like drowsy or distracted driving. Here’s the route we suggest:
  • Take I-25 N to exit 216 A towards I-76 E
  • Follow the signs to merge onto I-80 E
  • Take I-80 E to exit 16, where you can merge onto I-90 E
  • Follow the signs to get on the NY State Thruway/I-87 S
  • Use exit 21A to get on the Massachusetts Turnpike
  • At exit 134A, follow the signs to South Station in downtown Boston
It’s a good idea to use a navigation app while driving to help you avoid traffic jams and plan a route that accommodates how long you want to drive each day and where you want to stop. You should also make sure your car’s maintenance is up-to-date and that you’ve got roadside assistance coverage in case you have mechanical trouble along the way.
