What’s the best driving route from Dallas to Phoenix?

We’re moving from Dallas to Phoenix because, frankly, Texas is just not hot enough for us (it **snows** in Dallas sometimes!). Anyways, my wife and I are making a road trip out of our move west, so what’s the best driving route from Dallas to Phoenix?

Well, in your quest for never-ending sweltering temperatures, your trip from Dallas,
Texas
to Phoenix,
Arizona
will take 15 hours, 30 minutes driving time along I-20 W and i-10 W, covering 1,064 miles.
There is plenty to see on your drive west, so here are some highlights:
  • Gallop out of
    Dallas
    but stop in
    Fort Worth
at the Stockyards, which housed the city’s 19th century livestock industry but is now home to shops, restaurants, historical sights, and plenty of country music
  • Trek west and make a stop in Fort Davis, about 2 and half hours south of
    Odessa
to see the University of Texas McDonald Observatory, offering solar viewings, telescope tours, and views from Mt. Locke—a bit off the beaten path, but worth it
  • Continue west and take the Scenic Drive near
    El Paso
, with benches, paths, and breathtaking views of the city and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico
  • Hurdle into
    New Mexico
    and look around
    Las Cruces
, which sits on the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert—get in touch with nature by visiting the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, where you can interact with livestock and stroll the gardens
  • Ride into Arizona and pause in Tombstone, visit the OK Corral and hang with ghosts at the 1878 Boothill Cemetery, where it’s rumored numerous Wild West outlaws are buried
  • Continue your approach to hot-weather nirvana but passing through
    Tucson
, and stop at the Pima Air & Space Museum, which features more than 300 air and spacecraft on display on an 80 acre campus
  • Roll into
    Phoenix
, hit the links, and let the Valley of the Sun do with you what it wants
